The Union Casualties of
Battle of Fort Pillow

April 12, 1864

This page is a roster of the Union soldiers who fought at the Battle of Fort Pillow on April 12th, 1864, that I compiled from various sources and archival records.   There are two lists; the first is a list of Prisoners and the second is a list of Casualties or those killed and wounded.
The list of Prisoners was compiled by starting with the names listed in the appendix in the book "Campaigns of Lieut-Gen. N. B. Forrest".  The roster of Killed and Wounded were compiled from various sources, beginning with the US Congressional Report on the massacre and Andrew Ward's book "River Run Red".  Then I reviewed the service record for every soldier to look for Prisoner Forms or Death Certificates which is accessible at Fold3.com.  This required browsing the NARA files for the Bradford's
13th Tennessee Cavalry, 6 US Colored Heavy Artillery, 11 USCT(new), and 2 US Colored Light Artillery--- which was thousands of records.
Most sources estimate the total number of
Union soldiers present was 557.  My list now totals around 590, and I'm still checking a few more as well as the Civilians.

Prisoners of War from Battle of Fort Pillow
Including Escaped Soldiers and Civilians

Sorted by Unit and then by Name.

This first table is a list of the Union soldiers who were taken prisoner.  It is based upon a roster of 226 soldiers who were taken into custody by the Confederates.  While searching through service records, I Prisoner Forms were found for other soldiers.  Since they were not included on the roster of 226 who surrendered at the fort, it is assumed they were captured later that day and probably outside the fort.  One prisoner was reportedly captured while sick at his home.  There is no accounting of these additional survivors of the battle.

The list is sorted by the Units with the 13th (Bradford's) Tennessee Cavalry listed first, followed by the 6th Colored Heavy Artillery and next the 2nd Colored Light Artillery and the support units.  Within these units, the list is next sorted by soldier's last name.
These prisoners were sent to prison camp or, if they were black, returned to Mississippi to work as laborers.  Many of these names can be found on the National Park Service (NPS) site in the database for Prisoners at Andersonville.  My research has identified 95 of these prisoners died at Andersonville and another 6 died in other prisons.

Total Prisoners identified as dying at Andersonville Prison, GA (AGA)  = 101
RED indicates name was verified in unit from Service Records.
PW indicates name was on original list in Appendix to Jordan & Pryor.
PW
are names added from other sources, probably captured outside the Fort area.
Age is at the time of Enlistment, which may have been in 1862, or 1863.

NOTES:

The names are sorted by the Unit and then by the soldier's last name.  Some soldiers had alternate spelling of their last name.  A search for a name can be accomplished using the Browser's search feature.

1:
Major William F. Bradford is included because he was captured at the battle. During the night he escaped from the Confederate Officer's tent.  He was re-captured the next day and one version is that he was shot trying to evade capture and the other story is he was executed.  He was the brother of Capt. Theodorick Bradford, who was killed during the final assault on the fort.  See details on the Union Officers, below.

2:  Jordan & Pryor's book lists the names of the prisoners and their unit with the following breakdown:
          13 Tennessee Cav -  3 Officers & 148 Enlisted     =  151
           6  US HCA  - 2 Officers & 54 Enlisted
                =  56
           2  US LHA   - 1 Officer &  1 Enlisted
                =   2   $
           7  Tenn Cav -
               =   4
           6 Tenn Cav
-                                                    =   1
           Stigall's or Stegall's Home Guard  -                    =    6
24 Missouri Regt    -  Capt. Hunter
                =    1
QM unit - Lt. McBride & 1 Enlisted
                =    2
           Other Miscellaneous Units
                =    5     Grand Total = 226

$ Some names listed as members of 6USCHA were actually in the 2USCLA.

  3.  "Hancock's Diary" listed the following breakdown of Prisoners:

Prisoners -  7 Offices & 219 Enlisted Men  (or 56 Blacks and 163 Whites)
Wounded transferred to Platte Valley:   ~70 Officers and Men

Escaped in a skiff :  ~ 25 or  unknown
Total Survivors accounted for(excluding the escaped)  -
296 or about half the garrison.

 3.  From Andrew Ward's book, he states that 158 Prisoners were marched back to Jackson, TN, which included the following:  141 from the 13th Tennessee Cavalry; 4 from the 6USCHA; i.e. Capt. Epeneter, Lt. Bischoff, Sgt Hennessy and Privates Hatfield and Thompson; and 2 from the 2USCLA, i.e. Lt. Hunter and Pv. Baker; plus 6 from various units; and 4 civilians.
NOTES on Individual Prisoners:

William (Billy) R. Nail of Company E, 13 Tennessee Cavalry had the misfortune of being captured by the 16th Tennesse Cavalry(CS) regiment from which he had deserted.  His name appears on the role of prisoners but there is no record of him enrolled into any prison camp.  Either he died of his wounds enroute to the prison camps or his former comrades executed him as a deserter. (Source: Ward)

  John W. Long is
mentioned on page 293 of "River Run Red" as being a survivor of Andersonville who later died when the Steamer SULTANA exploded on the Mississippi River on April 27, 1865.  The NARA files for John W. Long of the 13 Tennessee Cavalry states he died and was buried at Andersonville prison.  There was a John Long of the 3 Tennessee Cavalry whose NARA records and other sources say died on the SULTANA explosion.  It seems that the book got the wrong soldier and unit.  There were no Fort Pillow prisoners on board the SULTANA.

Jasper Cozart of Company E, 13th Tennessee Cavalry, enlisted on January 20, 1864.   Jasper Cozart was from Crocket County but enlisted at Union City.  He had a brother, Newton, who enlisted in the Confederate 6 Tennesse Infantry. After capture at Fort Pillow, Jasper was taken to Newborn, SC, where he escaped and made it to the Union lines on March 15, 1865.  He moved to Texas after the war and had a daughter.
I researched this soldier in detail to see if he was related to a co-worker named Joseph Cozart, whose family had lived for 3 generations in Crocket, later Dyer County.  I could not find a connection.

Union Killed and Wounded
of Battle of Fort Pillow

The second table is a list of Casualties compiled from reference books, the Congressional Investigation Report, and NPS archive files.  Then the National Archives service records for each unit was reviewed for a soldier who was listed as MIA or KIA at the battle.  The records were reviewed for every soldier in the 13 Tennessee Cavalry, 6 US Colored Heavy Artillery and it's new unit, the 11 US Colored Troops (New), and the 2nd US Colored Light Artillery in order to locate a death certificate or other documentation that confirmed the soldier's death as a result of the battle.

This table includes a large number of MIA.  An MIA. was a soldier who had an entry in his records that he was missing in action after the battle.  These were soldiers who were not reported with the original list of 226 Prisoners.  However, many of these did survive and return to their unit within days or at the end of the war.  Usually at the end of a soldier's service records in the National Archives is a document such as (A) a Death Certificate or (B) a  Final Statement that would close the books on this soldier.  Many have the simple statement: “Missing since Fort Pillow, supposed killed”.
Therefore, the status reported in this table would reflect what was known immediately after the battle ended.  Some prisoners were paroled or maybe escaped.  Some blacks survied their forced labor and returned to the new unit in 1865.  Even some who had "Supposed Killed" in their records would eventually return and be discharged.
This list includes the 70 wounded, or WIA,  who were loaded onto the steamer "Platte Valley" and transported to Mound City, IL.  However, the report of one ship captain said this number included some civilians.  More soldiers were picked up by the civilian steamer, "Olive Branch".  Some were transported to Memphis while others who were wounded were later recovered and returned to their regiment.    The column designated "Time" represents the time during the battle when the soldier was wounded according to witnesses or his testimony.  The abbreviations are:
     M_A   = Morning Assault
F_A    = Final Assault on the fort but prior to surrender
P_W   =  Killed or wounded after fort was taken or while a prisoner
The column designated "Details" describe the wounds received.  "Fav" means his recovery was favorable; "UnFav" means his condition was not good.

RED indicates name was verified in unit from Service Records.
Age is at the time of Enlistment, which may have been in 1862, or 1863.

NOTES on Individual Soldiers:

Captain Theodore Bradford, was acting as signal officer and attempted to signal the gunboats for help. As the Confederate assault over-ran the fort, they saw him on a ridge signalling.  One account said he shot 3 Confederates as they attempted to capture him.  An order was given to kill the officer and he was shot to pieces by a rifle volley.
The acting commander of the fort, Major
William Bradford, jumped into the Mississippi River in an attempt to escape.  The Confederates fired volleys at him but missed.  He was retrieved out of the water and then tried to run up the bluff.  Again, volleys were fired at him and he was taken prisoner without any injuries.  During the night he escaped from the Confederate Officer's tent.  He was re-captured and one version is that he was shot trying to evade capture and the other story is he was executed.  The annotation "P_W" in this table indicates he was killed while a prisoner.

J. Arnold could be Ezekiel Arnold of Co. A 13 Tenn.  His records listed him as deserted before battle but also state: "No record of capture since April 11, 1864”.  I’m sure there are many soldiers whose records were lost and they were listed as deserted until further research cleared their names.

   Melville Jinks was
a 1st Sergeant in the 6 US Colored Heavy Artillery.  His NARA records states he was "florid" complexion and that he was believed to have died at Andersonville.  The NPS data base does not have a soldier under that name or any name similar to that.  There were no black soldiers captured at Fort Pillow who were sent to Andersonville or any other prison camp.

Other Names of Interest not present in the battle.

John Booth was Captain of Steamer LIBERTY.  Not to be confused with Major Booth.

William E. Johnson, Co. B, 13 Tenn Cavalry, was not present.  He was on board the Platte Valley.

   Lt. John Gregory
The service records of  Lt. Gregory, Co. A, 13 Tenn Cavalry, included a letter that states he was shot and killed by Major Bradford during a confrontation on Feb 23 1864 at Fort Pillow.  He was not killed at the Battle.  This might give some insight into the discipline of the Union cavalry that occupied the Memphis area during this time.

Why 2 Tables??      &  Explanation on my Research.

I started researching the Union names using the list of Prisoners in the Appendix to Jordan & Pryor's book
"Campaigns of Lieut-Gen. N. B. Forrest".  My initial research did not start with Service Records but instead I tried to identify the full names using Volume 2 of "Military Annals of Tennessee”.  Later, I gained access to the National Archives(NARA) service records for individual soldiers.
Next, I started compiling a list of names from two other sources: Andrew Ward's book "River Run Red" and the US Congressional Report, which has many errors with names and unit.  This was going to be my list of killed and wounded.  I also searched websites that may include family records or documentation of anyone killed in this battle.
But as it turns out, many of the prisoners were also wounded.  The official account reported 226 Prisoners were captured and 70 of these were loaded onto the steamer "Platte Valley" for transport to Mound City Hospital.  Then it gets complicated.  Some of those wounded would soon die: do I add them to the KIA roster or leave them with the Prisoner roster?  Then there were many others were escaped capture and they were picked up along the river banks---some maybe wounded some maybe died.  The purpose of the first table is to account for all the 226 Prisoners.  The original 226 prisoners are marked with a GREEN PW and additional prisoners are indicated by a BLUE PW.
Finally, there are those who went Missing in Action.  These soldiers could have been lost in the Mississippi River or just fell dead in some ravine.  In the NARA files there were several soldiers with entries "No records since April 11".  Either these could have disappeared or were taken prisoner and died in Andersonville or for the black troops, died while doing hard labor back in Mississippi.

Union Commanders
& Staff Officers

Hurlbut, Stephen A.,  Major-GeneralCommanding the XVI Army Corps in West Tennessee and overall commander of the garrison at Fort Pillow.  He was responsible for sending the 13th Tennessee Cavalry to re-occupy Fort Pillow after General Sherman had commanded these isolated forts to be disbanded.

Booth, Lionel F.,  MajorCommanding 1st Battalion, 6th US Heavy Artillery(Colored).  Major Booth transferred into the colored artillery and rose in promotion rapidly.  His unit arrived at Fort Pillow on March 29 and, being senior officer, was placed in command of Fort Pillow.  However, early in the morning, he was shot through the heart by a sniper.  The Union officers tried to keep this information from the Confederates during their truce negotiations by signing his name to the messages.

Bradford, William F.
,  Major
Commanding 13th US Tennessee Cavalry. The command of the garrison fell to this inexperienced officer after Major Booth was killed early in the morning of the battle.  Major Bradford jumped into the Mississippi River to escape.  Confederates fired several volleys but missed.  Major Bradford was retrieved from the river and he tried to escape back up the bluff and again all shots to stop him missed.  He was captured without any injury.  He was among the prisoners who were sent back to Brownsville.  That night he accepted an offer to stay in the tent of Colonel McCulloch but he escaped during the night. He was re-captured and one version is that he was shot trying to evade capture and the other story is he was executed.

Marshall, James, U.S. Navy Acting Master –  Commander of the tinclad New Era.   Major Booth had made arrangements for the New Era to provide heavy artillery support and a possible means of escape.  Major Theodore Bradford was responsible for signaling directions for fire.  Acting Master Marshall testified in the Congressional Report.

Bradford, Theodore F.,  Captain –  Brother to Major Bradford. Officer in Company A, 13th US Tennessee Cavalry.  Captain Bradford was signal officer and responsible for signalling the near-by gunboat.  Since Forrest feared the gunboats was a threat, he saw Captain Bradford as a threat to the capture of the fort.  Confederate troopers rushed Captain Bradford and surrounded him.  When ordered to surrender, Captain Bradford drew his pistol but was shot by a detachment of Confderates.

Hunter, Alexander M.,  Lieutenant Transferred from 1st Michigan Light Artillery, Lt. Hunter was commander of the section of  2nd US Light Artillery (Colored) sent to Fort Pillow, consisting of 35 enlisted men.  An eye witness reported Lt. Hunter fled to the river and was killed or drowned.  Most sources list him as killed, but he actually survived.  Research of genealogy records found that he was actually captured and survived the war.

a very long stretch of the river, and a single well-manned field-piece there
      would stop navigation entirely."

History of Regiments

6th U.S. Colored Heavy Artillery  -  11th U.S. Colored Troops(New)
Originally organized as the 1st Alabama Siege Artillery (African Descent), the regiment was redesignated on March 11, 1864. The battery arrived at Fort Pillow on March 29, 1864.  After the heavy losses at Fort Pillow, the 6th U.S. Colored Heavy Artillery ceased to exist.  The men were reformed into the 11th U.S. Colored Infantry Regiment (New)
The original list of prisoners included names of 56 soldiers from the 6USCHA.  However, some of the names were actually members of the 2nd Light Colored Artillery.  The black soldiers taken into captivity were placed into forced labor and many eventually return to their unit.
When researching the National Archives service records, be sure to check records under both units: the 6th USCHA and 11th USC Troops(New).
Some comments noted on their records states "Company Records destroyed at Fort Pillow".  Other soldies will have a Final Statement that says they were missing in action an dsuppoed killed.

13th Tennessee Cavalry(US)   (Bradford's Tennessee Cavalry Battalion)
Organization begun at Union City, Tennessee, October, 1863, with the creation of four companies.  Even though it was commonly called the 13th Tennessee Cavalry (US), this was not it's real identity. There was another 13th regiment lead by a Colonel Biffle.  The official designation of Col. William Bradford's unit was the 14th Tennessee Cavalry(US).  It was also known as the 13th West Tennessee Cavalry (US).
On February 2, 1864, with Major Bradford commanding, the regiment was ordered to move to occupy Fort Pillow.   On April 1st, a fifth company was ready to muster in under Captain John Poston.  But after the loss at Fort Pillow, it was never formed.  On February 14, 1865, this fifth company was consolidated with Co "E" 6th Tennessee Cavalry Regiment.

2nd U.S. Colored Light Artillery  -  Memphis Light Artilery
Originally formed as the 1st Tennessee Heavy Artillery Regiment(African Descent), Company "M".  It then became known as the Memphis Light Artillery.
+ April 1, 1863 -  Formed as Memphis Light Artillery.  Mustered in with 99 men on Nov. 23rd.

+ Oct 31, 1863  Became US Colored Light Artillery, Battery F.

  + March 11, 1864  - Became Co. "D", 2nd U.S. Colored Light Artillery

  + April 26, 1864  -  Reidentified as Company "F".

+ December 11, 1865  Mustered out of service.
Only one section was at the Battle of Fort Pillow.  A few months later, the 2 USCLA went with General Samuel Sturgis on a raid into Northern Mississippi where they again suffered a defeat by General Forrest at the Battle of Brice's Crossroads, June 20, 1864.

"Platte Valley" - Transfer of wounded to Mound City, IL

Under the flag of truce on April 13th, 70 wounded were collected and paroled and transferred to the steamer "Platte Valley" for a trip up the Mississippi River to the hospital near Cairo.  The steamer arrived at Mound City at 9:00pm on April 14 and was met by Head Surgeon Dr. Horace Wardner.   Dr. Wardner testified in the Congressional investigation that the wounded included 35 white soldiers, 27 colored men and 1 colored woman and 7 corpses.

Prisoner of War Camp at Andersonville, GA

"Andersonville Prison Camp, aka Camp Sumter, housed 45,000 Union prisoners during the entire war.  It had a death rate of 30%.   There were 139 documentated prisoners that were captured at Fort Pillow.  Among this group, they had a death rate of 77% at Andersonville or a total of 107."

Source:  "River Run Red" by Andrew Ward,  page 288

I have not confirmed this statistic.  Some of the 226 prisoners were black soldiers who were returned to hard labor in Mississippi.  The service records in National Archives does list details about deaths of soldiers.  The records contain a Prisoner Form that does list the date they were transferred to the Hospital and the date they died.  Sometimes the two dates are 1 or 2 days apart. Some have comments such as "died in Quarters".  Some were listed as dying at Florence, S.C., later in 1864 or 1865.  I assume these were prisoners who were transferred out of Andersonville when General Sherman's forces were approaching the camp.
Ward goes on to state the montly death rate among the prisoners brought from Fort Pillow:
6 would die in May; 11 in June, 17 in July and 28 in September.  However, the date of death as detailed for a few soldiers described in Ward's book are different than that found in NARA records.

By October 1864, the prisoners at Andersonville had been transferred to Florence Stockade
, SC.  Ward states that 6 of the 14 prisoners from Battle of Fort Pillow died at Florence, SC.

Stories from the Battle
For more details on individual soldiers, both Union and Confederate go to:   Stories

Lieut-Colonel Thomas Jackson was given command of the 6 US Colored Heavy Artillery on March 1864.  Even though he was in command of the unit, he placed Major Booth in command of the unit in the field.  After the battle, Lt-Col. Jackson became involved in the reporting of the events, both through official Army correspondence and other unofficial accounts.  Two stories that he circulated turned out to be questionable.
Lt-Col. Jackson developed an elaborate account of how the regimental flag was saved by Sgt. Eli Cothel of Company B.  The story goes that Sgt. Cothel was wounded early in the battle and as the fort was over-ran, he saw the regiment’s flag and took it and wrapped it around his body, thus staining it with his own blood while trying to rescue it. Sgt. Cothel never mentioned this account to any newspaper nor to the Congressional Investigation Committee for which he was a witness.  This could not have been Sgt. Cothel, because when he was wounded in the morning, he was taken down the bluff to the makeshift hospital and he escaped by crawling into the brush along the river.

Lt.-Colonel Jackson also identified Sgt. Cothel as the soldier who dug himself out after being buried alive by the Confederates.  This story is true but the real soldier was Daniel Tyler of Company B(see next story).  Lt-Col. Jackson also spoke highly of his troops by saying they continued fighting while retreating down the bluffs to the safety of the gunboats.  This did not match up with the account that was portrayed by the Congressional Investigation Committee. These stories told by Lt.-Col. Jackson as well as many other discrepancies he spoke about, may explain why the Committee did not include his testimony in their report.

After the battle, Daniel Tyler of Company B was badly wounded and the Confederates threw him into the ditch and buried him.  He was lying near the edge and was able to dig his face out with his good hand. By dawn of the 13th, he managed to dig himself out about the time the gunboat “Silver Cloud” arrived.  He managed to get down to the gunboat.  There were many newspaper accounts about Tyler’s second deliverance. Though badly wounded and almost blind, he returned to his unit in May 1864.  He then went somewhere to recuperate and when he returned in March 1865, he was accused of being absent without leave and was imprisoned in Libby Prison in Memphis.  Amid the filth and deplorable conditions, he died in prison 4 months later on July 12, 1865.

Charles Robinson was a civilian from Minnesota who had gained experience in photography that allowed him to follow the army and take photos of the soldiers.  Due to unknown circumstances, he was at Fort Pillow on the day of the battle.  When the firing started, they issued him a Union tunic and a rifle.  He surrendered when the fort was over-run and some Confederates stole his money and watch.  Later, his tunic was taken and this allowed him to blend in with the Confederates soliders as he was wearing grey civilian clothes.  He was eventually released.

African-American Civil War Memorial

Washington, D.C.

AA Civil War Monument

The African-American Civil War Memorial includes a statue that depicts four black Union soldiers; the fourth figure not visible is a sailor.  Behind the statue are two walls of tablets arranged in a semi-circle.  Engraved on the tablets are the names of approximately 200,000 black soldiers arranged by unit.   A small Museum and gift shop is located across the street.

This is an example of the names showing the 11th US Colored Infantry (New Organization), which was the new identity of the 6th US Colored Heavy Artillery after it was decimated at the Battle of Fort Pillow.  This first image shows the name of Major Lionel F. Booth, who was in command of all the troops at Fort Pillow.

11 USCT Roster

This next two images contain the names of Captain Charles J. Epeneter, who survived the battle, and Lt.-Col. Thomas J. Jackson, who was in command of the 6 USCHA but not present at the battle.  The other names that appear in the above tables are  underscored as either KIA or WIA.  White officers are underscored in Yellow.
